False fire alarm resulted in evacuating
many pensioners from

housing complex

A false fire alarm resulted in dozens of pensioners being evacuated from a housing complex as firefighters were deployed to tackle the incident on August 24th it has been reported.

Fire crews turned up at Moneyhill Court, in Field Way, Rickmansworth, at around 20:00 BST only to discover steam from a hot shower in one of the sheltered houses had triggered the alarm, reports the Watford Observer.

The system was reset and the pensioners allowed to get back into their houses, added the publication.

According to Becky Reid from the Fire industry Association (FIA), this incident: "clearly demonstrates the problems caused by fires, not just for the fire services but for everyone involved.”

She explained: "The FIA has been working with the Chief Fire Officers Association to reduce the incidents of false alarms."

"We have produced a Guidance document for the Responsible Person on False Alarm Management of Fire Detection & Alarm Systems. A copy of the Guide can be downloaded from the FIA website," she added.
