The Springfield Fire Department’s entire fleet of fire and emergency apparatus including 13 engines, two rescues, seven aerials and a HAZMAT vehicle are Pierce products.
Pierce Manufacturing, an Oshkosh Corporation company, has delivered a Pierce Ultimate Configuration (PUC) pumper and a Pierce aerial platform to the Springfield Fire Department in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Springfield Fire Department’s entire fleet of fire and emergency apparatus including 13 engines, two rescues, seven aerials and a HAZMAT vehicle are Pierce products. “Our goal is to make firefighting and rescue operations simpler, safer, and more effective for our firefighters, and the PUC configuration has many advantages including the two-step pump operations and additional compartment space for equipment,” said Steve Balboni, Springfield Fire Department’s head of maintenance and repair. “On both vehicles, we chose the Velocity chassis, in part, because of its interior space for firefighters and their gear.”

The PUC pumper is equipped with a 470 hp engine, 70-inch long cab, seating for four firefighters, stainless steel body, roll up doors, TAK-4 independent front suspension, Command Zone advanced electronics, 1500-gpm single stage PUC pump, 750-gallon water tank, Husky 12 foam system, 20-gallon foam tank, hosebed capacity of 250 feet of 2.5-inch hose with preconnect, 1000 feet of 5-inch hose, 300 feet of 3-inch hose, a dual module vehicle data recorder, and ladder storage inside the body.
The Pierce 100-foot Aerial Platform features TAK-4 independent front suspension, a 515 hp engine, stainless steel body, frontal impact and side roll protection systems, seating for four firefighters, Command Zone advanced electronics system, 10 kW generator, 400 amp alternator, a full complement of ground ladders, slide out adjustable trays, swing out toolboard and storage for air bottles in the fenders. The aerial device features Lyfe brackets for rescue equipment, twin monitors at the platform, breathing air to the tip, and white LED lighting along all three aerial sections.
Established in 1794, the Springfield Fire Department is one of the oldest fire departments in the country. The Department provides professional response to all fires, explosions, medical emergencies, and hazardous materials incidents. The Springfield Fire Department operates eight fire stations, a dispatch center, and a firefighter training center.
The Springfield Fire Department reviews all apparatus after ten years of front line duty and, at that point, they are evaluated for rotation into reserve status. Pierce dealer, Minuteman Fire and Rescue Apparatus of Walpole, Mass., provides local service and support.
