National Volunteer Fire Council released the Guide for Going Green in the Fire Service to reduce their impact on the environment.
People all across the nation are taking steps to decrease their impact on the environment, and there are many ways the fire service can do its part. The National Volunteer Fire Council released the Guide for Going Green in the Fire Service to highlight sustainable practices and inspire departments to reduce their impact on the environment.
There are many different ways a fire department can adopt green practices. Many departments are taking simple and inexpensive steps such as recycling and using energy efficient light bulbs and appliances, while others are undergoing green construction projects to reduce their station’s carbon footprint. Some of these practices have the added benefit of helping the department’s bottom line, such as lowering energy costs. The Guide looks at an array of Earth-friendly steps departments can take and then spotlights several green departments from across the country.
Fire Corps teams can champion a green initiative within their department. Volunteers can help identify obtainable green practices and assist in implementing environmentally-friendly policies.
