The blaze was tackled by the use of ground monitors and main jets together with high volume pump and aerial appliances.
Fourteen appliances and more than 100 personnel from Mid & West Wales Fire & Rescue Service attended a major fire at the Afan Lido Aquadome at Sandfields, Port Talbot with the additional support of three appliances from South Wales Fire Service. Three floors of the Sports Centre were affected, with the fire spreading quickly through the roof area from the pool area where it was thought to have originated at approximately 16.50.
The blaze was tackled by the use of ground monitors and main jets together with the high volume pump and aerial appliances which were used as water towers. The mobile Control Unit was also in attendance. Using the high volume pump, water was brought from the river approximately one mile away in order to bring the fire under control.
Firefighters from Mid & West Wales Fire & Rescue Service tackled the fire throughout the night with two pumping appliances and two aerial appliances remaining at the scene damping down the hotspots and making the area safe. No injuries occurred and investigations are currently ongoing as to the cause of the blaze.
Head of Neath Port Talbot Command, Ken Wall, said, "The fire at Afan Lido Aquadome is a great loss to the area and will have a huge impact on the local community." He praised the very quick actions of the Afan Lido staff in evacuating the building in order to ensure the safety of the public who were using the facilities at the time the fire broke out.
A joint meeting was held with the Fire Service, police and Neath Port Talbot Borough Council where it was agreed that once the premises had been secured they would be handed over to Neath Port Talbot Borough Council who had enlisted the services of specialist contractors and engineers who would examine the building and take action as appropriate.
