| KFRS received around 20 emergency calls after Kent was hit by floods |
Following heavy rains, Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) received around 20 emergency calls to reports of flooding and issued safety advice to the public.
Herne Bay was worst hit, with the Environment Agency reporting more than 60 properties, mainly basement flats, affected by surface water flooding caused by heavy rainfall.
After fire officers visited properties in Central Parade and Mortimer Street, Herne Bay, crews along with a fire engine were sent to pump out floodwater.
Elsewhere, firefighters from Ramsgate were sent to a property in Harbour Road to pump out floodwater from a shop’s basement. Ashford’s firefighters also dealt with flooding in a shop in County Square that had caused structural damage to the ceiling and the shop’s electrics.
Emergency control room staff also received reports of flooding in Aylesford, Dartford, Gravesend, Rochester and Tunbridge Wells, but predominantly the callers did not need immediate assistance and were referred to their insurers and local council.
KFRS urged everyone in the event of flooding to follow basic safety tips:
- Remember that during a storm the emergency services will be very busy. Only call for immediate assistance if there is a risk to life or serious property or environmental damage
- Following a flood in your home, make sure all electrical circuits are fully dried out and checked by an electrical engineer before switching back on
- Do not attempt to walk through flooded areas. Even shallow water moving fast can sweep you off your feet and there may be hidden dangers such as open drains or damaged road surfaces
- Look after neighbours who may be vulnerable
- Keep an eye on weather reports on local television or radio news channels. Do not travel in heavy rain storms unless absolutely necessary
- Motorists should not attempt to drive through flooded roads or fords. The water is often deeper than it looks and may be moving quite fast. Your vehicle may be swept away or become stranded
