Firefighters from across Wigan visited the elderly shovelling away the snow to clear car windscreens and paths.
Fire crews from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have been venturing into their local communities helping neighbours to stay safe in the snowy weather, as well as put big smiles on lots of faces.
Firefighters from across Wigan visited the elderly shovelling away the snow to clear car windscreens and paths, with a Leigh crew even giving them soup to warm them up. Hindley's St Peter's C of E junior school appreciated the help of their local firefighters, who cleared snow to improve their access.
Blackley firefighters spent a January morning clearing snow and gritting floors at local community bases including Charlestown's St Mark's Church and several medical and childcare centres.
Fire crews from other areas of Greater Manchester also cheered up residents by clearing snow, with a firefighter from Bolton Central Fire Station coming to the rescue of a 'damsel in distress' when he carried a lady's bags up a snowy hill whilst pushing her pram. The woman was extremely grateful, later calling into the fire station with some chocolates for the crews as a 'thank you'.
Deputy County Fire Officer Jim Owen said: "Our firefighters have been out in the community during the bitter weather, offering their assistance wherever possible, particularly to the vulnerable. Our plan is to take a positive role in our local communities wherever we can. It goes without saying that we'll be there in times of emergencies, like fire or road traffic collisions, but we want people to know we can and will help out in smaller ways too. Those times can be just as important."
