This week they’re looking at the marine industry and with it being mostly ship/ocean work, due to the unpredictability of varying factors such as weather, the ocean, the ship itself, and more, having the correct uniform and workwear shouldn’t be something that the workers should worry about.
The importance of flotation suits and buoyancy aids can help protect workers when(if) falling into the ocean and sinking or drifting away.
Initial cold shock
Furthermore, with thermal properties included in the jackets, the risk of hypothermia is slowed and the initial cold shock is reduced greatly so that users remain calmer and not panting for breath when they find themself in the water. All that being said, let’s take a look at the workwear required for the marine industry.
Headwear - Starting with headwear and helmets are generally required when working on a ship, due to the machinery on board (depending on the type of ship work). Earplugs and safety glasses may also be required again, depending on the type of machinery onboard. Furthermore, due to the constant changing of the weather, woolly hats, balaclavas and snoods are all great options to help keep the face warm and covered up as much as possible.
Thermal base layers
Overalls or high-viz trousers with flotation aid, should do the trick and help workers stay safe
Bodywear - There are some important factors to consider for bodywear such as, regulating body temperature, waterproof workwear, visibility, floatation, and buoyancy aids. All of these are important and in some cases needed for working on a ship. Therefore, thermal base layers, waterproof, floatation jackets, gloves, and high-viz workwear should be the go-to for bodywear here.
Legwear - Overalls or high-viz trousers with flotation aid, should do the trick and help workers stay safe and remain seen if any accidents occur. But let’s not forget that body temperature and regulating the heat users have is also key, as well as keeping their muscles from spasming - in that case, thermal clothing and base layers should be considered.
