With increasing importance placed on the role of firefighting and evacuation lifts in the built environment, and a new draft British Standard BS 8899 open for consultation, Matthew Ryan, Associate at the Fire Surgery Limited is offering a unique insight into this complex area at next month’s LIFTEX event (25 – 26 May 2016, ExCeL, London).
“High rise living and working in the UK is more popular than ever. For new build developments, the provision of robust and resilient lifts can be achieved with relative ease with these lifts designed and installed to modern standard, supporting a building’s fire strategy” says Ryan. However, as we know, high rise construction is not new and over the last 20 years lift technology and fire safety design has advanced significantly, resulting in large variations in the standards and functionality of existing lifts intended for use during a fire. The new standard will affect lift owners and managers, specifiers, engineers and contractors so it’s crucial to understand the implications.”
Modernising lifts for firefighters’ use
Ryan will take part in a seminar session focused on modernising lifts for firefighters’ use, looking at why we need them. He will highlight the differences between installations from different periods and discuss the opportunities to improve them as part of refurbishment works. He will also focus on the draft standard, and how to apply it with a case study example.
The session runs from 11:30am on Wednesday 25 May and forms part of a free two-day seminar program running at 11.30am on both days. LIFTEX also comprises an exhibition featuring over 100 exhibitors showcasing the latest innovative solutions for the lift and escalator industry.
