Fire safety engineering scholarships offered by the BRE Centre for Fire Safety Engineering at the University of Edinburgh aim to make buildings safe from fire and prevent casualties.
Fire safety in modern buildings is being promoted by the Lloyd's Register Educational Trust, which has provided more than £200,000 in new student scholarships. New education and research initiatives into how fires can spread in modern buildings featuring lighter construction materials and open-plan interiors are being undertaken at the institution. All aspects of modern fire safety techniques and new ideas to influence safety planning and design, such as building evacuation procedures, fire-safe construction and guidance for firefighters, are part of the study programme.
"Only through research linked to innovative educational programmes can new approaches to fire safety take hold," commented Dr Luke Bisby, a researcher at the BRE Centre for Fire Safety Engineering. Research by scientists at the University of Ulster could 'revolutionise' the construction industry, which has secured funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. Experts at the university are analysing the fire resistance of a new type of steel column, which features elliptical sections, a relatively new product available to structural engineers.
