The 2009 Award of Excellence was presented during the meeting to the Mesa (AZ) Fire Department.
The Fire Corps National Advisory Committee (NAC) met on October 26 at the Fire Corps national office in Greenbelt, MD. The NAC, which is comprised of representatives from many national fire and emergency service organizations as well as other prominent leaders in the industry, came together to provide expertise and guidance for Fire Corps' future activities and to discuss the direction of the program.
The 2009 Award of Excellence was presented during the meeting to the Mesa (AZ) Fire Department. Members of the Mesa Fire Corps team, known as the Volunteer Corps, were present to accept the award and give informative presentations outlining their program's success. The Volunteer Corps is an integral part of the Mesa Fire Department and considered a critical component in the department's success. Last year, the volunteers provided close to 29,000 hours of service and saved the community more than $585,000.
Sarah Lee, Acting Fire Corps Director, updated the NAC on the progress Fire Corps has made since its last meeting. Lori Moon, Fire Corps Deputy Director, reported on several Fire Corps initiatives, including the State Advocate Network, and highlighted Fire Corps best practices. Following the speakers, the NAC participated in a strategic brainstorming session with the goal of ensuring the future success of the program.
