The Hammersmith Hospital in London, UK, has a very busy radiology room for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and X-ray procedures. The different apparatuses within this room and its corresponding data control room are very expensive equipment which were protected from fire by a Halon fire suppression system.

Regulation 2037/2000

We know that Halon is damaging the ozone layer and adding to the global warming problem. Therefore, the European Community has issued a regulation 2037/2000 which makes the removal of Halon mandatory by the end of 2003.

Fike, together with their business partner Combined Protection Systems, successfully retrofitted the radiology and data control room of the Hammersmith Hospital with ECARO-25, which utilizes DuPont’s FE25™ fire extinguisher.

Success factors of the program:

  • Minimum downtime of the radiation and data control room
  • Cost savings compared to other products

ECARO-25 A Halon Retrofit

Fike’s ECARO-25 makes it possible to leave the existing piping in place and exchange the cylinders and the discharge nozzles only. These major advantages of ECARO-25 make the Halon retrofit as easy as possible even for equipment which is running almost 24 hours a day/365 days a year.

Now the Hammersmith Hospital is in full compliance with EC 2037/2000. They chose the easiest and most cost-effective solution that’s also safe for people and the environment: the ECARO-25 fire extinguishing system from Fike Corporation.
