Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate participated in a panel discussion Sunday at the 2010 Harvard University Social Enterprise Conference on preparing for disasters in the 21st century. Fugate talked about the increasing role the private sector and non-profit groups play in emergency management, particularly in engaging the public in preparing for and responding to disasters.
"FEMA is only one member of our nation's emergency management team - the private sector, non-profits, and especially the public all have critical roles to play in responding to emergencies," said Fugate. "Today's discussion provided an opportunity to strengthen partnerships and talk about ways we can work with the public to keep communities safe."
Also participating on the panel were Bryan Koon, Director of Emergency Management for Walmart; Joseph Becker, Senior Vice President of Disaster Services for the American Red Cross; and Kathleen Tierney, Director of the Natural Hazards Center. The panel was moderated by Dutch Leonard, the George F. Baker Jr. Professor of Public Management at the Kennedy School and Eliot I. Snider and Family Professor of Business Administration and co-chair of the Social Enterprise Initiative at Harvard Business School. Emerging trends in issues ranging from emergency management to micro-financing and corporate social responsibility were discussed.
The 2010 Social Enterprise Conference is a joint effort of Harvard Business School and Harvard Kennedy School of Government. The conference invites speakers and panelists each year to address current issues related to social enterprise. The theme of this year's conference is 'New Frontiers: Redefining Service for the 21st Century'.
